Two Arrested in Kratie for Electrocution Death During Illegal Hunting

A tragic incident occurred in Kratie province, northeastern Cambodia, where a man died after coming into contact with an electrocution device set up for illegal hunting. Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the case. The incident took place on the night of September 18th in O'Phlong, Thmey village, Chitr Borei district, Kratie province. The victim, identified as 35-year-old Son Phear from Dar village, Chitr Borei district, was reportedly hunting at night when he accidentally touched the installed electrocution device, leading to his death. Following the incident, an investigation was launched by the Chitr Borei district police, led by Colonel Buth Nuon, in cooperation with the specialized department of the provincial police. Authorities identified four individuals suspected of involvement and, after two days of investigation, arrested two suspects on September 20th. The arrested individuals are Nut Khim, 41, residing in Dar village, and Yin Songlang, 22, residing in Sok San village, Chhrouen village, Thmey commune, Chitr Borei district. According to the police, a total of four suspects were identified. While two have been apprehended, the other two remain at large and are currently being sought by the authorities. The two arrested suspects are being held at the Chitr Borei district police station for questioning and legal proceedings. This incident highlights the serious dangers posed by illegal hunting methods, particularly the use of electrocution devices, which are still prevalent in some parts of Cambodia. Such devices pose a fatal risk not only to the intended animals but also to any person who might accidentally come into contact with them. In Cambodia, illegal hunting of wild animals for food or as a source of income occurs, particularly in rural areas. However, the methods used can escalate, leading to tragic incidents like this one. Authorities are urged to strengthen surveillance and crack down on such illegal activities.
