Prioritize power supply, public transport over rocket launch, says Sen. Padilla

Senator Robinhood "Robin" Padilla urged the administration to prioritize improving the country's electricity supply and public transportation over plans to launch a rocket into space. In his "Kontra-SONA" (counter-State of the Nation Address) on Tuesday, Padilla highlighted persistent power outages in remote provinces and the long travel times to the Bicol Region, advocating for decentralized energy development and high-speed rail. Padilla called for the devolution of authority in energy development to local government units (LGUs), citing frequent brownouts in areas like the Bicol Region. "Why can't the national government give autonomy to far-flung provinces in terms of power supply, including decentralization or devolving some aspects of energy development?" he asked, urging a system where local governments can independently improve their energy supply. He also pointed out the need to streamline requirements for establishing power plants and to fundamentally improve the country's transportation infrastructure. "I understand the excellent plan to launch a rocket, and I am happy about that because as a child, I was an admirer... it's a dream of every country. But my request is, before we get there, please fix our transportation first," he added. Padilla specifically mentioned the travel time from Metro Manila to the Bicol Region, which remains at 12 hours, and pushed for projects that would ease transportation to the region. He cited the bullet train as a potential solution, noting that previous administrations had plans for one that were later scrapped. He emphasized that this should be prioritized before proceeding with the rocket launch. Padilla also expressed support for the government's plan to launch a rocket into space in 2027. He also backed the passage of the freedom of information bill and the proposed social media ban for minors.
