Cambodian Coastal Women Empowered as Marine Mammal Survey Leaders

Women from the Prek Toat fishing community along Cambodia's coast are undergoing capacity building training to take on leading roles in marine mammal surveys, data collection, and the promotion of nature tourism. This initiative is being carried out in cooperation with the Marine Conservation Organization (MCC). According to MCC, the trained women are acquiring expertise in marine mammal surveys and enhancing their data collection capabilities. They are leveraging their natural observational skills, identifying wave patterns, and spotting animal fins from a distance, showcasing innate talents. This keen observation and tracking ability is also applied to photography, which is crucial for identifying and tracking individual marine mammals. The photos they take serve as an important bridge connecting research with on-the-ground implementation, contributing to community awareness campaigns and the promotion of sustainable nature tourism. This initiative highlights the indispensability of empowering local communities, particularly women, in advancing marine conservation efforts. These women are expected to lead activities in observing and protecting marine mammals responsibly, drawing on their deep understanding of their marine territories.
