Cambodia Gears Up to Host Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference

Cambodia is nearly ready to host the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC-2), scheduled to take place from August 26 to 28, 2026. The conference is expected to draw participation from over 50 countries and approximately 10 international organizations, with Cambodia aiming to leverage the event to further enhance its active role on the international stage. Chea Thireth, spokesperson for the Senate, informed AKP that preparations are "almost 100 percent complete," with the nation awaiting the historic international gathering. He confirmed that leaders from more than 50 countries have indicated their participation, with potential for further confirmations. The hosting of this conference aligns with two key objectives set forth by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate. Firstly, to strengthen accountability between constituents and senators within the country. Secondly, to bolster parliamentary diplomacy, complementing the executive branch's activities in international relations. Thireth emphasized that the legislative branch contributes to expanding Cambodia's prestige and relations on the international stage, working collaboratively with the executive branch. He views Cambodia's role as host as an opportunity to showcase its transformation from a war-torn nation to one of peace and territorial integrity since 1998. He stressed the importance of national unity and collaboration among all relevant institutions to elevate the nation's honor on the international stage, which is crucial for expanding Cambodia's potential. The conference is anticipated to adopt the "Phnom Penh Declaration," under the overarching theme of "Solidarity for Peace and Common Prosperity, Strengthening International Law and Peaceful Dispute Resolution." This initiative aims to reaffirm the importance of adhering to international law and pursuing peaceful conflict resolution in an era marked by rising unilateralism.
