PNP to Boost Partnership with Ride-Hailing Firms to Protect Riders

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is intensifying measures to protect riders from being exploited by crime rings, following incidents where delivery riders were nearly used as drug couriers. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that unscrupulous groups or individuals will not be allowed to exploit them, compromising the safety and dignity of those in ride-hailing and delivery services. This initiative comes after two delivery riders in Marikina discovered they were transporting marijuana worth P149,700 last week. The riders became suspicious of the parcels they were to deliver and coordinated with the city police, leading to the discovery of 828 grams of marijuana and nine milliliters of liquid marijuana. Nartatez commended the riders for their vigilance and cooperation with authorities. He urged delivery riders to call the Unified 911 system to report suspicious bookings and to be more discerning when handling suspicious packages. Ride-hailing and delivery services have become an indispensable part of daily life in the Philippines, especially in urban areas, with their importance growing significantly since the pandemic due to the rise of online shopping. However, the high demand for fast deliveries and the nature of work as independent contractors also make them vulnerable to exploitation by criminal syndicates. The PNP's move aims to protect this sector and ensure the safety of citizens' lives.
