Prabowo Expresses Hope for Future Alliance with Major Opposition Party PDIP

President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia has expressed his conviction that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the country's largest opposition party, will ultimately stand with his government to defend the nation's interests. The statement was made at an event attended by political party elites. Speaking at the 28th anniversary of the National Awakening Party (PKB) in Jakarta on Thursday (23/7), President Prabowo stated that PDIP's stance is patriotic and consistently upholds the interests of the nation. "Ultimately, I believe PDIP will also be with us in defending the country and the nation. That is my instinct, my heart's voice," the President said. Prabowo believes that all members of PDIP are Indonesian citizens and that differences in political stance are normal. He expressed optimism that even if they temporarily part ways, they will eventually reunite. "PDIP's heart is actually the same as ours. Criticism is good. Criticism saves us, it reminds us," President Prabowo continued. This statement comes in the wake of a letter from PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, which clarified PDIP's position as a "balancing force" against President Prabowo Subianto's "Merah Putih" (Red and White) coalition cabinet. Megawati emphasized that Indonesian parliamentary democracy does not recognize strict divisions like opposition and ruling parties, and under the presidential system, the sovereignty of the people and the constitution are paramount. She also stated that PDIP supports government policies that benefit the people, and vice versa, making it clear that they do not hold an a priori stance of rejecting the government. Prabowo's remarks are seen as signaling a desire to ease political tensions and foster future cooperation between the ruling coalition and the largest opposition party. In Indonesian politics, post-election alignments and reconciliations among parties are common occurrences.
