Xi Urges Cambodia, Thailand to Rebuild Trust, Emphasizing Dialogue for Conflict Resolution

SHANGHAI, July 15, 2026 (KPT) – Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Shanghai on Monday, urged Cambodia and Thailand to consolidate their ceasefire and gradually rebuild mutual trust, stating it would serve the long-term interests of both nations. Xi made the remarks while Hun Manet was in China for a working visit, attending the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance. According to Chinese state media, Xi conveyed that China supports efforts by Cambodia and Thailand to find a solution to their border dispute through dialogue and negotiations, and stands ready to continue playing a constructive role in this regard. Prime Minister Hun Manet briefed Xi on the latest developments in the dispute and expressed gratitude for China's active engagement in promoting dialogue, de-escalating tensions, supporting the ceasefire, and efforts towards a peaceful settlement. He also appreciated China's humanitarian assistance to civilians displaced by the conflict. Earlier, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin announced that Beijing would provide emergency humanitarian aid worth 20 million yuan, approximately US$2.8 million, to support those affected by the border clashes. The meeting underscored China's role as a key stakeholder in regional stability, with Xi emphasizing the importance of dialogue and trust-building for securing peace and long-term cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand.
