Lao Red Cross Highlights Importance of First Aid in Migration Context

The Lao Red Cross marked World First Aid Day by holding an event to highlight the growing importance of first aid, particularly in the context of migration. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chanthanhom Minithib, Vice President of the Lao Red Cross, noted that with an increasing number of people leaving their homes for reasons such as employment, education, and family reunification, the need for first aid is becoming more critical. Dr. Chanthanhom stated that individuals away from their homes and communities may face greater difficulties in accessing emergency assistance. She stressed that first aid should not be solely the responsibility of medical professionals, asserting that everyone can learn basic first aid skills and provide immediate assistance during emergencies. She encouraged students to share their learned knowledge with their families and friends, contributing to the building of safer communities where no one is left without assistance. Ms. Yumi Maeshawa, Health Representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), expressed appreciation for the close cooperation between the IFRC and the Lao Red Cross in promoting first aid and community health. She reaffirmed the IFRC’s readiness to continue supporting the Lao Red Cross's activities. The event provided an opportunity for students and participants to strengthen their awareness and practical knowledge of first aid and its role in saving lives and supporting communities during emergencies. This year’s World First Aid Day was held under the theme “First Aid in the Context of Migration” and the slogan “On the move, but never alone.”
