Philippines to Develop GI Roadmap for Farm Products

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Intellectual property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) are set to create a geographical indication (GI) roadmap for the country's farm products. This initiative aims to protect and enhance the quality and uniqueness of the Philippines' diverse agricultural produce. A GI is an indication applied to products originating in a specific geographical region, possessing a quality, reputation, or other characteristic of that region. It assures consumers of the product's origin and quality, while protecting producers from unfair competition. The Philippines boasts numerous superior farm products from various regions, such as mangoes, coffee, and chocolate, but a systematic framework for their protection and promotion has been lacking. The development of this roadmap is expected to make these specialty products competitive in the international market and contribute to the economic development of rural areas. The introduction and dissemination of the GI system are intended to prevent the circulation of counterfeit goods and increase the revenue of legitimate producers. It will also help raise awareness of Philippine farm products both domestically and internationally.
