PNP Reviews Safeguards Against Espionage Amidst Legislative Push

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is reviewing its information security measures following renewed discussions on strengthening the country’s defenses against espionage. PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. issued the directive as the House of Representatives has approved on final reading the proposed New Espionage Act. This legislation aims to update the legal framework governing classified information, national defense assets, and sensitive government operations. The review encompasses safeguards, accountability measures, and personnel awareness programs. General Nartatez stated that the police are backing efforts to protect classified information critical to national security while ensuring that the constitutional rights of individuals are respected. "Any proposed law that helps deter espionage and protects sensitive government operations is a welcome development, provided it remains consistent with the Constitution and respects fundamental rights," he said. Furthermore, the PNP is reinforcing its coordination with the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA), the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other security agencies. This collaborative approach is intended to enhance the overall national security posture and ensure a more robust response to potential threats.
