Cambodia Lauds Malaysia's Regional Peace Efforts in High-Level Talks

PHNOM PENH, Aug 4, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia has praised Malaysia’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability during talks between Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur, officials said Monday. The meeting on August 3 came as Prak Sokhonn co-chaired the third session of the Cambodia-Malaysia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC), a key mechanism for strengthening ties between the two countries. According to Cambodia’s foreign ministry, Sokhonn thanked Malaysia for its role in easing tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border, citing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord and the ASEAN Observer Team as important contributions to regional stability. The two sides also looked ahead to the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation across multiple areas and to support peace, stability and prosperity in Southeast Asia. During the meeting, Sokhonn conveyed birthday greetings to Prime Minister Anwar from Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet ahead of the Malaysian leader’s upcoming birthday. Malaysia has played a leading diplomatic role in efforts to reduce tensions between Cambodia and Thailand following recent clashes along their disputed frontier. As ASEAN chair, Kuala Lumpur has sought to encourage dialogue between the two neighbours and support regional initiatives to prevent further escalation. Cambodia has repeatedly welcomed Malaysia’s mediation efforts, describing them as an important contribution to regional peace and stability and a reflection of ASEAN’s collective responsibility in maintaining harmony.
