Se Pon River Floods: 129 Households Evacuated in Quang Tri Province

In Lao Bao commune, Quang Tri province, Vietnam, a rapid rise in the Se Pon River has forced numerous residents to evacuate. Around 3 AM on September 13, the river's water level surged dramatically, causing flooding in residential areas of villages such as Trieu Phuoc, Tan Phuoc, Vinh Dong, and other low-lying zones. Consequently, by the morning of the same day, the Standing Office of the Quang Tri Provincial Civil Defense Command had assisted in relocating 129 households, comprising 397 people, to safety. This region, situated near the border between Vietnam and Laos, is characterized by its low-lying topography, making it susceptible to frequent flooding from heavy rainfall, which has consistently impacted residents' lives. The current situation highlights the increasing risk of natural disasters in countries like Vietnam, where infrastructure is still developing, exacerbated by the rise in extreme weather events due to climate change. While the Vietnamese government prioritizes development and economic growth, strengthening its capacity to respond to such natural disasters is also a pressing concern. Enhancing infrastructure, establishing early warning systems, and conducting evacuation drills for residents are crucial for mitigating damage.
