Cambodia's Rice and Paddy Exports Exceed $1 Billion in Jan-Jul

PHNOMs PENH, Aug 6, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia earned more than US$1.08 billion from rice and paddy exports in the first seven months of 2026, buoyed by higher yields, strong demand and favorable growing conditions, official data showed Thursday. The Cambodia Rice Federation (CRF) said the country shipped more than 707,000 tonnes of milled rice to 66 destinations between January and July, generating US$415 million. Exports of over 3 million tonnes of paddy brought in US$665 million, lifting total earnings above US$1.08 billion. CRF president Lay Chhun Hour said sales were supported by key markets including the European Union, China and Malaysia, while shipments to the Philippines rose by about 70,000 tonnes. He noted that Cambodia’s rice exports had maintained momentum over the past two years, reflecting both favorable weather and stronger international demand. He attributed the growth in 2025–26 to adequate water supplies that encouraged farmers to expand cultivation, increased drying capacity, continued government backing and sustained overseas demand. “The combination of natural conditions and institutional support has allowed Cambodia to strengthen its position in global rice markets,” he said. According to the National Bank of Cambodia, the farm sector grew 0.7% in the first half of 2026, slower than the 1.2% pace a year earlier. Analysts said the modest growth underscored the challenges facing agriculture despite the strong export performance, including rising input costs and competition from regional producers. Rice remains one of Cambodia’s most important agricultural exports, providing income for millions of farmers and contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings.
