Thai Court Upholds Life Sentence for Actor's Son in Dismemberment Murder

SURAT THANI — Thailand’s Court of Appeals Region 8 has upheld a life sentence for Spanish chef Daniel Sancho Bronchalo over the premeditated murder and dismemberment of Colombian plastic surgeon Edwin Arrieta Arteaga on Koh Phangan in 2023. The ruling, delivered at Koh Samui Provincial Court on September 25, rejected appeals from both Sancho and Arrieta’s parents. Sancho, the son of Spanish television and film actor Rodolfo Sancho Aguirre, was convicted of killing Arrieta, dismembering his body, and subsequently disposing of the remains and destroying the victim’s passport. The court found Sancho’s claim that Arrieta died accidentally during a fight to be inconsistent with his earlier statements to investigators. Evidence presented indicated that Sancho had purchased a knife, saw, cleaver, garbage bags, rubber gloves, and cleaning supplies, keeping them in his hotel room before Arrieta’s arrival on Koh Phangan. The court noted that Sancho had the opportunity to seek medical assistance or alert hotel staff after Arrieta was injured but instead remained in the room for approximately an hour before proceeding to dismember the body. Based on these circumstances, the court determined the killing to be premeditated. While Sancho admitted to concealing, moving, or destroying the body to hide the death or its cause, he denied premeditated murder and damaging or destroying the victim’s passport. The Koh Samui Provincial Court had initially sentenced Sancho to death, but reduced the punishment to life imprisonment, taking his confession into account. The court also ordered him to pay 4.424 million baht in compensation to Arrieta’s parents, who had joined the case as co-plaintiffs seeking 30 million baht. The Court of Appeals Region 8 ruled that the first instance court’s sentence and compensation order were lawful and upheld the judgment.
