Hun Sen Recalls 28-Year-Old Assassination Attempt, Emphasizes Power Consolidation and Son's Succession

Former Cambodian Prime Minister and current Senior Minister Hun Sen commented on the 28th anniversary of an assassination attempt against him on September 24, 1998. He stated that the incident solidified his political resolve, leading him to pledge internally, "I must strengthen my power and end the war." At 46 years old at the time, Hun Sen had initially intended to serve as Prime Minister only until 2003. However, following the assassination attempt, he decided to "continue as Prime Minister until I no longer wish to do so."
