Jakarta Air Quality Ranks Second Worst Globally, Mask Use Advised

Jakarta's air quality has reached an unhealthy level, ranking as the second most polluted city globally on Monday morning. According to IQAir data at 8:00 AM WIB, Jakarta's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 170, with PM2.5 concentrations recorded at 82 micrograms per cubic meter. In response to this condition, the public is advised to reduce outdoor activities. If leaving the house is necessary, wearing a mask is recommended to mitigate exposure to pollution. IQAir also suggests residents keep their windows closed to prevent polluted outdoor air from entering their homes. At the same time, Baghdad, Iraq, ranked first with an AQI of 178, followed by Dhaka, Bangladesh, in third place with an AQI of 166. An AQI category of 151-200 is classified as unhealthy. Exposure at this level can increase risks for sensitive groups and begin to affect the general public if prolonged. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, in collaboration with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), is preparing an Early Warning System for air quality. This system aims to provide faster and more accurate air quality forecasts, enabling the public to take preventive measures before conditions deteriorate. Primary concern groups include children, the elderly, pregnant women, and residents with respiratory conditions.
