Indonesia Strengthens IP Protection to Boost Small, Medium Industries

Indonesia is strengthening its intellectual property (IP) protection framework to boost the competitiveness and economic growth of its small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). This initiative involves legal amendments and institutional improvements aimed at enhancing measures against counterfeiting and ensuring swift protection for IP rights in cases of infringement. MSMEs form the backbone of the Indonesian economy and are major job creators. However, IP infringements, such as the proliferation of counterfeit goods and unauthorized use of intellectual property, have been significant barriers to their growth. The government anticipates that bolstering IP protection will encourage innovation, attract investment, and ultimately enhance the international competitiveness of Indonesian products. Specific measures under consideration include revising IP-related laws, strengthening penalties for IP rights violations, and expediting the process from filing a complaint to resolving disputes. Furthermore, efforts will be made to expand awareness campaigns and educational programs to help MSMEs better understand the importance of IP protection and its procedures. This move is considered a crucial step for Indonesia as it seeks to solidify its position as an economic hub in the ASEAN region and transition towards a more sustainable, innovation-driven economy.
