Thai Heritage Cloth 'Pha Khao Ma' Nominated for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Status

Thailand has put forward a proposal for the "Pha Khao Ma: Multifunctional cloths in Thai life" to be inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Pha Khao Ma is a traditional, multi-purpose cloth deeply connected to the fabric of Thai life. Woven from cotton or silk, typically measuring about 60-80 centimeters wide and 120-180 centimeters long, the Pha Khao Ma is characterized by its large check design or plain indigo hues. It is found across all regions of Thailand, with designs and colors varying to reflect the unique identity of each locality. Historically, this versatile cloth served a multitude of purposes, including as head cloths, belts, bathing wear, ceremonial shawls, shoulder cloths, towels, baby carriers, storage bags, and handkerchiefs. It was also used in exchanges between communities and presented as gifts to elders. In contemporary times, the Pha Khao Ma has transcended its traditional roles to become a staple in modern fashion. It is now tailored into various garments such as casual wear, suits, skirts, and luxury formal wear. By incorporating modern patterns, colors, and fabrics, this traditional textile has been adapted for everyday use and is poised for global recognition. (PRD)
