‘Lancang-Mekong Peace Boat’ Represents Strong Commitment to Peace, Development, and Friendship: Chinese Ambassador

PHNOM PENH, August 5, 2026 -- At the launch ceremony of the ‘Lancang-Mekong Peace Boat’ project on the morning of August 5, 2026, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Wang Wentian, stated that the ‘Lancang-Mekong Peace Boat’ represents a strong commitment to safeguarding peace, promoting development, and strengthening friendship. In his speech, the Ambassador emphasized that amidst unprecedented global changes, instability, and uncertainty, maintaining good neighborly relations and regional peace and stability is a common interest for the Lancang-Mekong countries and a shared aspiration of the people of our six nations. He added that we must uphold the concept of comprehensive, common, and sustainable security, enhance mutual trust through dialogue, resolve differences through consultation, and ensure security through cooperation, thereby jointly safeguarding long-term peace and stability in the region. H.E. Wang Wentian further stated that the ‘Lancang-Mekong Peace Boat’ brings a bright prospect for promoting development. Under the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism, high-quality cooperation between China and the five Mekong River countries has deepened and become more tangible in jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, yielding fruitful results in various sectors such as connectivity, production capacity cooperation, cross-border economy, agriculture, and water resources. He reported that last year, trade between China and the five Mekong River countries reached a record high of 500.9 billion US dollars, a 150% increase compared to ten years ago. Therefore, we should continue to build on this momentum by focusing on building the Lancang-Mekong Economic Development Belt, accelerating the process of economic integration, strengthening the construction of the Lancang-Mekong Innovation Corridor, and expanding cooperation in emerging fields such as the digital economy, artificial intelligence, technological innovation, and ecological governance, contributing to the common development of all participating countries. In addition, the Ambassador added that the ‘Lancang-Mekong Peace Boat’ brings a common pursuit of strengthening friendship. The Lancang-Mekong countries are geographically close and share deep people-to-people friendship. The people of the six countries possess natural advantages in frequent exchanges and mutual understanding compared to many other regions in the world. We should promote the Lancang-Mekong culture of equality, sincere mutual assistance, and family-like intimacy, continuously expand people-to-people and cultural exchanges among the six countries, and further strengthen traditional friendship among the people, keeping it vibrant at all times. It is noted that the ‘Lancang-Mekong Peace Boat’ project includes a series of visits, seminars, and exchanges, which will deepen the understanding of the Lancang-Mekong ‘common home’ and help enhance mutual understanding and promote friendship among the six countries. In conclusion, the Ambassador reiterated that the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia supports the annual ‘Lancang-Mekong Peace Boat’ project and is confident that with joint efforts, this project will achieve even greater success and become a significant initiative of Lancang-Mekong cooperation.
