Cambodia to Reinstate Strict Traffic Law Enforcement from September 1, 2026

Cambodia is set to reinstate strict enforcement of traffic laws starting September 1, 2026. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Sar Sokha, has formally requested Prime Minister Hun Manet to implement this measure. The request aims to re-strengthen the enforcement of traffic regulations, which had been temporarily relaxed due to border conflicts and the global economic crisis. The renewed enforcement will particularly focus on areas with a high incidence of traffic accidents. These include Phnom Penh capital, and the provinces of Sihanoukville, Kampot, Kampong Speu, and Svay Rieng. The emphasis will be on violations that can lead to serious accidents, such as speeding, drunk driving, disregarding traffic signals and priority rules, and improper cargo transportation. The Minister of Interior cited the alarming increase in traffic accidents during the period of relaxed enforcement as the reason for this decision. This move signifies the government's strong commitment to improving traffic safety across Cambodia. Past experiences have indicated that while lax enforcement might offer temporary convenience, it can lead to a decline in long-term safety.
