Thai Govt to Review Nationality Acquisition System to Prevent Foreign Misuse

The Thai government has announced a significant move to tighten its grip on social order and combat the misuse of its nationality system by foreigners. This initiative stems from recent findings where criminal elements and 'nominee' operations, often utilized by foreign entities to circumvent legal restrictions, have been found to be connected with individuals holding Thai citizenship. In line with directives from Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, a specialized task force under the Ministry of Interior has been established to conduct a thorough review of the entire nationality acquisition process. This includes scrutinizing the established criteria, the procedural steps involved, and the examination and approval mechanisms. A key component of this review will be a retrospective audit of nationality acquisitions over the past year. The objective is to identify and close any existing legal loopholes that could be exploited, thereby strengthening the 'Nationality Act of 1965' to better suit contemporary challenges and safeguard the rights and interests of Thai nationals. Complementing these efforts, the Department of Provincial Administration is actively engaged in enhancing the understanding of immigration laws among provincial and local administrative officials. This proactive measure seeks to bolster the grassroots surveillance network, empowering both officials and the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Particular attention is being paid to instances where foreigners might exploit Thai identification documents or personal data, especially in the context of setting up companies using Thai citizens as nominal owners. Furthermore, the Ministry of Interior is addressing the issue of unauthorized accommodation businesses. Through an analysis of online platforms offering short-term rentals nationwide, the department has compiled a database of such establishments and has directed provincial authorities to verify their operational status. Investigations will focus on identifying and rectifying issues related to unlicensed hotel operations or facilities that fall short of registration requirements as non-hotel accommodations, with subsequent amendments to relevant regulations planned. "Our aim is to prevent the unlawful exploitation of our legal framework, to preserve the rights and benefits of the Thai people, and to effectively curb the practice of foreign nominee schemes," stated a spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior.
