Prabowo's 'Rage Video' Over Parliament Fire Debunked as Fake News

A video circulating on Indonesian social media, claiming President Prabowo Subianto was enraged by a fire at the Parliament building (DPR RI), has been debunked as fake news by Liputan6.com's fact-checking team. The claim, which has been spreading since last week, appeared on various Facebook accounts. These posts juxtaposed images of the burning Parliament building with President Prabowo's face, accompanied by narratives such as, "The Parliament building was burned, this is an act of treason. This is not an expression of opinion." Hashtags like "#Prabowo is angry, #Parliament was burned" were also used. However, a fact-check by Liputan6.com using Google searches with keywords like "Prabowo response to Parliament fire" led to a Kompas.com video titled "Prabowo's Response to the Burning of the Regional Parliament Building: 'The Intention is to Cause Chaos'" (published September 1, 2025). In this video, President Prabowo commented on an incident where a regional parliament (DPRD) in South Sulawesi was set ablaze on August 29, 2025, resulting in the deaths of four civil servants (ASN). He stated, "And remember, in South Sulawesi, four innocent civil servants, people who are not involved in politics, became victims. The Parliament building was burned, this is an act of treason, this is not an expression of opinion." Furthermore, no credible information was found regarding the burning of the national Parliament building (DPR RI) in July 2026. Therefore, the video depicting President Prabowo's anger over a Parliament fire is false. In reality, it is an edited and repurposed clip of the President's comments following protests in late August 2025.
