Iligan City Prepares for El Niño's Impact on Agriculture and Electricity

ILIGAN CITY – The city government of Iligan is bracing for the impacts of the projected "super" El Niño on the area’s agriculture and electricity supply. City officials discussed measures against El Niño’s impact during the 3rd Quarter Meeting of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) last Monday. Engr. Cristobal Tanael, of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said that they are preparing for the worst-case scenario. "We are preparing for the worst-case scenario, but we are also hoping for the best," Tanael said. The El Niño phenomenon is characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, which can lead to significant changes in weather patterns worldwide. In the Philippines, El Niño typically brings about drier conditions and increased temperatures, which can have adverse effects on agriculture, water supply, and public health. The city government of Iligan has been implementing various measures to mitigate the impact of El Niño, including the promotion of water conservation, the development of drought-resistant crops, and the improvement of irrigation systems. However, Tanael acknowledged that the city's preparedness is still insufficient to fully address the potential impacts of a "super" El Niño. "We need more resources and support from the national government to effectively implement our disaster preparedness and response plans," he said. The city government is also coordinating with various government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private sector partners to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive response to the El Niño phenomenon. "We are working closely with our partners to ensure that we have a robust plan in place to address the potential impacts of El Niño on our city," Tanael said. He also urged the public to be vigilant and to cooperate with the city government's initiatives to mitigate the effects of El Niño. "We need the cooperation of every citizen to ensure that we can effectively manage the challenges posed by El Niño," he said.
