Long Châu, a leading pharmacy chain in Vietnam, has partnered with German pharmaceutical giant Bayer Vietnam to introduce a new generation of contraceptive solutions to the Vietnamese market. This advanced medication not only provides contraception but also offers treatment for heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) and irregular periods. The new solution incorporates two hormones, estradiol valerate and dienogest, aiming to provide women with an additional choice for family planning, particularly those experiencing heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding. According to definitions by the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), heavy menstrual bleeding is characterized by excessive blood loss that impacts a woman's physical, mental, and social well-being. This condition can occur from the onset of menstruation through the perimenopausal transition and can lead to iron deficiency anemia, fatigue, pelvic pain, and negatively affect overall health. Research conducted in Vietnam, specifically at Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital and Hue Central Hospital between June 2016 and June 2019, and published in the Journal of Mid-Life Health in July-September 2022, highlighted the prevalence of heavy menstrual bleeding. The study involved 150 perimenopausal and menopausal women with abnormal uterine bleeding, revealing that heavy menstrual bleeding accounted for 62.2% of cases. Despite its significant impact on quality of life, many women tend to perceive heavy menstrual bleeding as a "normal" phenomenon and live with its symptoms without seeking appropriate consultation or treatment. Medical experts emphasize the importance of proactive reproductive health care during the perimenopausal stage. While fertility declines with age, women can still conceive until menopause. However, a subjective belief in reduced fertility in middle age may lead some women to discontinue or inconsistently use contraception, increasing the risk of unintended pregnancies. Pregnancies at this age can carry higher risks of complications for both mother and fetus. Long Châu's collaboration with Bayer aims to meet the diverse health needs of Vietnamese women, break down psychological barriers, and promote a more proactive and open approach to reproductive health. Clinical evidence suggests that the estradiol valerate and dienogest hormone therapy can significantly reduce menstrual blood loss, with one Australian, German, and US study indicating an 88% reduction after six months of use in women with heavy bleeding, thereby mitigating the risk of anemia and iron deficiency. As part of its strategy to bring new-generation, rare, and complex disease medications closer to the public for a "healthy Vietnam," Long Châu operates over 2,700 pharmacies across 34 provinces, supported by more than 22,000 pharmacists. The company plans to continue strengthening partnerships with leading domestic and international pharmaceutical corporations to expand access to quality pharmaceutical care for millions of Vietnamese families.
