Cambodia Lodges Formal Protest Against Thai Border Activities

PHNOM PENH, Sept 18, 2026 (KPT) – The government spokesman Pen Bona said Friday that formal protests lodged against Thailand demonstrated Cambodia’s categorical rejection of what it described as the unlawful occupation of its territory and construction activities by Thai forces. Speaking at a press briefing, Bona said the protests were essential to reaffirm Cambodia’s sovereignty over border locations allegedly occupied by Thai troops in violation of international law. He added that the documents carried legal weight and could be used to protect Cambodia’s territorial integrity. “Formal protests are indispensable for reaffirming Cambodia’s lawful ownership of certain locations along the border,” he said. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had lodged another protest over Thai military activity near Border Pillar No. 9 in Ta Tum, Anlong Veng district, Oddar Meanchey province, on Sept 15. According to the ministry, Thai forces used heavy machinery to clear land and dig trenches in the area. Cambodia said the activities violated its sovereignty, citing the 1904 Franco‑Siamese Convention, the 1907 Treaty and a 2000 memorandum of understanding on land‑border demarcation. It also referred to a joint statement of Dec 27, 2025, under which both sides agreed to continue survey work through the Joint Boundary Commission. Officials stressed Cambodia does not recognise any unilateral boundary line or territorial claims made by Thailand. Meanwhile, an ASEAN Observer Team visited a displaced‑persons camp in Rung Chhay Village, Banteay Meanchey province, on Sept 16. Authorities said more than 3,300 families – over 13,000 people – remain unable to return home due to damage from fighting and the security situation.
