Phu Quoc Boat Capsizing: Critical Patient Shows Significant Recovery

The most critically injured Indian passenger from the tourist boat capsizing incident off Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, is showing significant signs of recovery after six days of intensive treatment at Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. According to Dr. Tran Thanh Linh, Head of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Cho Ray Hospital, the patient's health has improved markedly since being transferred from Phu Quoc for treatment in Ho Chi Minh City. The patient is now conscious, no longer requires oxygen support, and has stable blood pressure. The temporary pacemaker has been removed, and the patient can eat independently and perform light activities in bed. Dr. Linh stated that if the patient's condition continues to progress favorably, a hospital-wide consultation will be held on July 20 to transfer the patient to relevant departments for continued cardiac monitoring, nutritional enhancement, and physical therapy. This patient was the most severely injured in the incident on July 11, where a tourist boat carrying Indian passengers capsized off Phu Quoc, resulting in 15 deaths and 21 survivors. Upon admission, the patient suffered from severe respiratory failure due to drowning, shock from multiple traumas, cerebral hemorrhage, and acute myocardial infarction due to coronary artery occlusion. Cho Ray Hospital had dispatched an intensive care and interventional cardiology team to Phu Quoc for consultation. It was decided to perform an emergency coronary artery recanalization procedure on-site. Following the successful intervention, the patient was fitted with a temporary pacemaker and then airlifted to Ho Chi Minh City for further treatment. Three days later, the patient was weaned off the ventilator and could breathe independently, though still requiring some oxygen support. Other patients with less severe injuries who were treated in Phu Quoc have already been discharged.
