Remains of 519 Fallen Soldiers Recovered, DNA Identification Accelerated
Vietnam is accelerating the identification of war martyrs' remains through enhanced DNA sampling. To date, 519 sets of remains have been recovered, with search efforts ongoing domestically and abroad. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to acknowledging wartime sacrifices and providing closure for families.
The provincial Steering Committee 515, responsible for the search for, recovery and identification of war martyrs’ remains, launched a campaign on August 3 to collect biological samples from 1,033 unidentified remains at the cemetery for DNA analysis. This initiative underscores Vietnam's ongoing commitment to acknowledging wartime sacrifices and providing accurate information to families. Local authorities aim to complete DNA sampling from unidentified graves at martyrs' cemeteries by the end of September before transferring the samples to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology for analysis. The total comprises 466 sets of remains recovered in Vietnam, 174 in Laos, and 850 in Cambodia. On August 4 alone, 15 sets of remains were recovered, including 11 individual sets and four sets from two mass grave sites, along with nine sets of associated artifacts. This effort reflects the profound memories of the intense battles of the Vietnam War (American War) and the nationwide mobilization. The Vietnamese government, operating under a one-party system, places significant importance on managing these historical memories for national integration and the cultivation of patriotism. In particular, activities aimed at healing the wounds of war play a crucial role in promoting social stability and national unity. Furthermore, as Vietnam deepens its international relations alongside its economic growth in recent years, its foreign policy also emphasizes a future-oriented stance while confronting its past. The acceleration of remains recovery and DNA identification could attract attention not only for strengthening domestic social cohesion but also within the context of international humanitarian aid and cooperation.
