This stance is rooted in the nation's complex geography, which encompasses 699 distinct seasonal zones, each exhibiting unique rainfall characteristics. BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani articulated this critical distinction following a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta. "Indonesia is divided into 699 seasonal zones. One area is not the same as another, the pattern of rain is also not the same," Faisal stated. He further elaborated on the diverse climatic patterns, noting that certain regions, such as the western part of Bukit Barisan, sections of northern Kalimantan, and the majority of Papua, consistently experience high rainfall regardless of broader national weather trends, even during periods of drought elsewhere. In contrast, other areas, like parts of Maluku, are simultaneously in their rainy season while much of the archipelago transitions into the dry season, illustrating the stark regional climatic divergences. Consequently, BMKG's assessment dictates that weather modification efforts must be meticulously tailored to the specific conditions prevalent in each locality. The selection of operational sites further involves a thorough consideration of the status of 240 reservoirs, which are vital for irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and the water supply needs of local communities. Faisal assured that all such operations adhere to rigorous scientific analysis and utilize environmentally benign, natural seeds to mitigate any potential ecological harm.
