Cambodian Journalists Undergo Rigorous Field Training in Turkey

Twenty-five Cambodian and international journalists have successfully completed rigorous field training as part of the 30th "Journalism in Conflict Zones" program in Ankara, Turkey. On the afternoon of September 16, 2026, participants engaged in a special training session focused on responding to emergencies and unseen dangers, including countering tear gas bombs and water cannons used against protestors or demonstrators. The training went beyond theoretical lessons, requiring all journalists to participate in practical, on-field exercises. They honed skills in evading and dealing with tear gas, including the use of gas masks, observing wind direction to escape areas affected by toxic fumes or tear gas, and battlefield first aid. In confronting high-pressure water cannons, trainees learned techniques for maintaining balance and quickly finding shelter to avoid impact or injury from the water pressure. Journalists who underwent this field simulation reported that confronting such staged incidents firsthand provided invaluable real-world experience, helping to reduce panic and enhance their confidence in making immediate decisions when reporting from conflict zones or violent protests. The training program concluded successfully, equipping participants with essential knowledge and techniques to ensure they can continue their mission of delivering accurate news to the public with the highest degree of safety.
