Laos Dispatches Soldiers to Cambodia-Thailand Border Observation Mission

The Lao People's Democratic Republic has dispatched two rotational soldiers to join the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) in Cambodia to monitor and verify the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border, following the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between the two countries. According to a press release from the Ministry of National Defence spokesperson, the two rotational officers, Lieutenant Colonel KHAMPHET FONGLAMAY and Lieutenant Colonel SINGSAVAN VONGSOUVANH, arrived in Cambodia on the afternoon of July 23, 2026. They were warmly welcomed by officers from the International Relations Department of the Ministry of National Defence and the Cambodian Coordination Group (CLG). The spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence emphasized that Cambodia fully supports and strengthens the role of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) in ensuring the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, thereby promoting transparency, mutual trust, and the protection of citizens' lives. Simultaneously, Cambodia always welcomes friendly countries to send observers or participate in assisting peace efforts. The Royal Government and the Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia remain steadfast, loyal, and highly responsible in their commitment to fully and meticulously respect and implement the Joint Communiqué of the 3rd Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on December 27, 2025, the Joint Statement on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on October 26, 2025, and other related agreements, aiming for swift improvement and the return to long-term normalcy, peace, and stability. It is worth noting that since the deployment of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) in Cambodia after the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand came into effect, the team has been continuously carrying out its mission to observe and verify the situation in the border areas. This includes inspecting sites damaged by attacks from the Thai side, such as bridges, schools, residential houses, and other civilian infrastructure. These inspections aim to gather information, verify actual events, and prepare reports as evidence to support the monitoring of ceasefire implementation, as well as to promote transparency and trust among the parties concerned.
