Cambodian, Chinese Media Urged to Boost Cooperation for Mutual Understanding

AKP Phnom Penh, September 17, 2026 -- Closer media cooperation is needed to build mutual trust, deepen understanding and strengthen ties between Cambodia and China, scholars and journalists said at a recent discussion in Kunming, China’s Yunnan province. The discussion took place during a four-day visit by a delegation of three Cambodian journalists from the state-run Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP), Fresh News, and AMS to Kunming from Sept. 10 to 13. Dr Zhao Shulan, director of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies at the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences, and representatives of the Yunnan International Friendship Association held the discussion with the Cambodian delegation. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Cambodian and Chinese media institutions, promoting mutual understanding and contributing to the long-standing friendship between the two countries. As new technologies such as AI and digital media reshape international communication, media organisations should play as bridges for cultural exchange between the two countries, through reporting accurate information and narratives, they said. The Cambodian journalists shared perspectives on Cambodia-China relations and briefed their Chinese counterparts on Cambodian public views concerning a number of issues. Cambodian journalist from Fresh News Mr. Pa Chetha emphasised the important role of responsible journalism in providing factual information and correcting misleading narratives. “Closer cooperation between Cambodian and Chinese media organisations to exchange verified information and provide greater public understanding of issues affecting bilateral relations,” he said. Dr. Zhao Shulan highlighted the importance of accurate information and direct communication in helping people better understand developments in Cambodia and the broader region. She noted that misinformation and incomplete information can create misunderstandings, particularly when issues are discussed across different languages and media environments. The institute encouraged greater information-sharing between Cambodian and Chinese institutions, including through media content, to provide the public with clearer and more balanced information. The discussions also underscored the value of reporting directly from credible sources and strengthening communication between journalists, researchers and relevant institutions. Such cooperation, the participants noted, can help reduce misunderstandings and contribute to stronger people-to-people relations between Cambodia and China. The Chinese researchers and representatives said the discussions had helped them gain a better understanding of the issues and suggested that Cambodia provide more information in Chinese to help prevent misunderstandings and respond to inaccurate information that could affect bilateral relations. The exchange highlighted the important role of media in providing reliable information, improving public understanding and strengthening people-to-people ties between Cambodia and China. The Cambodian delegation also visited two Chinese technology companies, Inspur, a major provider of cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence and digital solutions, and Shanhai Luijuan Technology, an AI-based video production company.
