GCash, a leading fintech firm in the Philippines, is deepening its partnership with Visa to introduce a new 'link-and-pay' feature. This will allow users to directly link eligible Visa cards for QR code transactions, eliminating the need for wallet top-ups and enhancing convenience and flexibility in digital payments.

MANILA, Philippines — GCash, a leading fintech firm in the Philippines, is set to introduce a new "link-and-pay" feature that allows users to directly use their linked Visa cards for QR code transactions, eliminating the need for wallet top-ups. This development stems from a deepened partnership with global payments company Visa. Under the new feature, users will be able to connect eligible Visa credit or debit cards to their GCash accounts. These linked cards can then be used directly as the funding source when scanning a GCash QR code at participating merchants. While a specific rollout date was not disclosed, the companies indicated that the feature will launch soon. Currently, users with insufficient balances in their GCash wallets must first top up their accounts via linked bank accounts or fund transfers before completing a transaction. The "link-and-pay" functionality aims to streamline this process by charging payments directly to the linked Visa card. Visa stated that this enhancement will provide consumers with greater flexibility and make digital transactions more convenient. It is expected to support everyday purchases at various establishments nationwide where GCash QR is accepted, including restaurants, weekend markets, and tourist destinations. To bolster security, every card-funded transaction will utilize Visa Payment Passkey, a biometric authentication solution. This technology allows users to verify purchases through fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN, bypassing the need for traditional passwords or SMS one-time passwords (OTPs). Visa claims that this technology, built on Fast Identity Online (FIDO) standards, can reduce fraud by up to 50 percent compared to SMS-based OTPs. Jeffrey Navarro, Visa Philippines country manager, commented, "Consumers increasingly expect flexibility in how they pay, and are looking for payment experiences that are simple, secure and seamless." Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of G-Xchange Inc., the mobile wallet operator of GCash, added that the feature will grant millions of Filipinos greater freedom in managing their payments while preserving the platform's user experience. As digital payments continue to gain traction in the Philippines, both companies anticipate that enabling card-funded QR payments will further accelerate the adoption of cashless transactions and expand consumer payment options.
