Cambodia Inaugurates New Automotive Assembly Plant in Kampong Chhnang

Cambodia officially launched a new automotive assembly plant for the GAC brand in Kampong Chhnang province on the morning of September 17, 2026. The facility, an investment by TH Automotive Manufacturing, was inaugurated under the auspices of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The plant is designed to assemble approximately 20,000 vehicles annually, with 90% intended for the domestic market and 10% for export. The total investment in this project is close to $20 million USD. The assembly plant employs a total of 250 local workers, including 20 women, alongside 2 foreign technicians. Following a trial operation that began on March 8, 2026, the factory has already assembled a total of 213 vehicles. The company has received support from the government, relevant ministries, and local authorities. The presence of the GAC assembly plant signifies positive progress in Cambodia's automotive industry. Currently, there are a total of 15 automotive assembly plants that have requested investment registration and are under construction in Cambodia. Of these, 10 are operational, 2 are not yet operational, and 3 are still in the project phase. Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that the total investment in this sector amounts to $248 million USD, with 72% originating from foreign investment and 28% from domestic capital, creating a total of 2,774 jobs. Prime Minister Hun Manet further indicated that the government will introduce additional incentive policies in the future to further support the automotive assembly industry and create a more favorable investment environment. He emphasized that Cambodia is not in a rush to have a large number of assembly plants but rather aims to strengthen existing factories and companies to ensure their survival and growth in Cambodia.
