Philippines to Court Tech Giants for New 'Pax Silica' Hub

The Philippine government is set to court some of the world's largest technology companies to establish a presence within the planned Pax Silica hub in New Clark City. Among the key targets on the government's "wishlist" are tech giants such as Apple, Nvidia, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), MediaTek, United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), Qualcomm, AMD, and Broadcom. Development work for Pax Silica could commence as early as 2027, signaling the government's ambition to position the Philippines as a new epicenter for advanced technology industries. The initiative aims to foster technological innovation and economic growth by attracting these major players to set up operations within the hub. In recent years, the Philippines has been actively enhancing incentives and infrastructure to attract foreign direct investment, building on its success in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector. The Pax Silica project represents a strategic move to expand into higher value-added technology fields, leveraging existing strengths. New Clark City, a planned urban development located away from the congested Metro Manila, offers ample space and well-developed infrastructure, making it an attractive location for large-scale research and development facilities and manufacturing bases. Investment in the Philippines' technology sector is also intrinsically linked to its economic structure, which relies heavily on overseas employment. The development of advanced industries domestically could create high-skilled job opportunities, potentially leading to increased national income. For Japanese companies, which are already significantly involved in the Philippines' BPO and infrastructure sectors, the emergence of a new technology hub could further deepen bilateral economic ties.
