Authorities in Cambodia's northwestern province of Oddar Meanchey have arrested a senior executive of the opposition Candlelight Party on suspicion of incitement that could destabilize social order. The internal security police of the Oddar Meanchey Provincial Police arrested the male suspect on August 5. The arrested individual has been identified as Nhean Sarum, who holds the position of Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Candlelight Party for Oddar Meanchey Province. He is also a member of the party's Central Committee and a member of the council for O'Smach Sangkat. According to police, Sarum is suspected of engaging in incitement activities related to the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute, which could cause social unrest. Following his arrest, the suspect was transferred to the Oddar Meanchey Provincial Police Headquarters for questioning. Subsequently, legal documents will be prepared for his referral to the Oddar Meanchey Provincial Court to proceed with legal procedures, in accordance with the court's order. This arrest comes amid heightened political scrutiny of opposition parties in Cambodia and public attention towards border issues with Thailand. Disputes over border demarcation have been a long-standing issue in certain regions between Cambodia and Thailand, occasionally leading to increased tensions.
