China-ASEAN Expo to Spotlight CAFTA 3.0 Opportunities, Impact on Laos

The 23rd China-ASEAN Expo, themed "CAFTA 3.0 Opportunities, Better Life," will run from Sept. 17 to 21 in Nanning, China, highlighting new business opportunities under the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA) 3.0 framework. The expo will feature over 3,400 companies from more than 70 countries and regions, covering approximately 170,000 square meters and showcasing the latest achievements in China-ASEAN cooperation. Economic ties between China and ASEAN countries have deepened in recent years. Bilateral trade between the two sides surpassed 1 trillion U.S. dollars for the first time in 2025, reaching 1.05 trillion dollars. In the first seven months of 2026, trade reached 744.41 billion dollars, up 24.7 percent year on year, accounting for 21.8 percent of China's total foreign trade. China has remained ASEAN's largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years, while ASEAN has been China's largest trading partner for six successive years. The expo will showcase products and projects ranging from traditional industries to digital communications, green development, and artificial intelligence (AI). A dedicated AI marketplace will display over 500 products, and a new exhibition area will highlight demand from ASEAN countries for projects and applications in transport, smart logistics, AI, urban management, and industrial park development. Laos, as a member of ASEAN, stands to benefit from enhanced economic integration, trade and investment facilitation, and cross-border industrial and supply chain cooperation through the CAFTA 3.0 upgrade with China. However, the Laotian economy still faces significant challenges such as infrastructure development lags, fiscal deficits, and currency (Kip) instability. Effectively leveraging economic cooperation with China while addressing these domestic issues will be crucial for Laos's sustained economic growth and its ability to fully capitalize on the opportunities presented by CAFTA 3.0.
