Siem Reap Provincial Council Urges Crackdown on Online Scams to Boost Tourism
The Siem Reap Provincial Council has directed authorities to eradicate online scams, aiming to protect the province's tourism sector and investment environment. The Siem Reap Provincial Council has urged provincial law enforcement and administrative authorities to take decisive action to eradicate online scams (Online Scams). This directive aligns with Prime Minister Hun Sen's policy to eliminate online fraud within Cambodia. For Siem Reap, a major tourist destination, this measure is deemed essential to prevent negative impacts on the tourism industry and to attract further investment. The instruction was issued during the 26th ordinary session of the Siem Reap Provincial Council held on July 6, 2026, which was attended by leaders from various provincial departments. During the session, Siem Reap Deputy Governor Ngov Sengkak reported on the tourism sector. According to his report, Siem Reap welcomed over 1.5 million tourists in the first half of 2026. However, foreign tourist arrivals decreased by 33% compared to 2025. This decline in international visitors was attributed to global security concerns, which have also affected the private sector.
