Six Rebels Surrender Combat Gear in Maguindanao del Sur

Six former members of the Dawlah Islamiya and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters surrendered to government forces in Maguindanao del Sur on Wednesday. The group, known for their expertise in fabricating improvised explosive devices (IEDs), turned over combat weapons and explosives to the Army’s 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion, local authorities confirmed. The surrender ceremony took place in Barangay Midtimbang, Datu Anggal Midtimbang. Brigadier General Edgar L. Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, oversaw the event alongside local officials. This development is part of the government's ongoing efforts to reintegrate former militants into society within the Bangsamoro region, aiming to bolster peace and stability in the southern Philippines. The government's strategy involves a combination of military operations and socio-economic programs designed to address the root causes of extremism and encourage defection from militant groups.
