Red Rainfall Warning Issued for Western Luzon Amid Southwest Monsoon

MANILA, Philippines — A red rainfall warning remained raised over parts of Zambales and Tarlac on Sunday afternoon amid the effects of the southwest monsoon or habagat, the state weather bureau said. In its 2 p.m. advisory, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said that these areas are expected to experience continuous heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Metro Manila and other areas were placed under an orange rainfall warning, which signifies intermittent strong rains that could lead to flooding and landslides. The state weather bureau advised the public to be vigilant and to take precautionary measures against possible flash floods and mudslides. PAGASA also warned that sea travel could be risky in the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon due to the prevailing monsoon. Residents in affected areas were urged to monitor weather updates and to prepare for possible evacuations. This development comes as the Philippines is in its rainy season, which typically lasts from June to November. The southwest monsoon, or habagat, is a major driver of rainfall during this period, often bringing heavy downpours and typhoons to the country.
