Jomtien Beach Transformation Heralds New Era for Pattaya Tourism

PATTAYA, Thailand – Jomtien Beach is undergoing a major sand nourishment and expansion project aimed at protecting the coastline, creating more space for tourism activities and sports, and preparing the area for Thailand’s next generation of tourism. A field inspection on August 5 found that the project, carried out by the Marine Department, is progressing by around 30–40% and remains on schedule for completion in February 2027. The project is designed to address coastal erosion while expanding the beachfront area for visitors and recreational activities. However, the atmosphere at Jomtien Beach remains relatively quiet during the low season, with fewer Thai and foreign tourists compared with the peak travel period. A foreign visitor said a wider beach would provide more space for walking, exercising and enjoying seaside activities. He added that cleanliness, safety, better facilities and improved organization would be key factors encouraging tourists to spend more time at the beach. Beachside massage operators said business has slowed noticeably during the low season, particularly with fewer large tour groups arriving. However, independent foreign travelers continue to visit and use local services. They said the beach improvement project could help revive local businesses if combined with better cleanliness, safety standards and improved management of vendors. Restaurant operators along the beachfront said tourist behavior has changed, with visitors now placing greater importance on atmosphere, food quality, cleanliness and overall experiences rather than simply dining. A larger and better-developed beach area could create new opportunities for food, sports and leisure activities while encouraging more visitor spending. Beach chair operators also welcomed the expansion, saying a larger beachfront could support more activities and provide long-term benefits for local businesses. However, they stressed the importance of proper planning to balance tourism development with existing operators while maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety and service. The Jomtien Beach project comes amid Thailand’s shift toward a “Value over Volume” tourism strategy, focusing on higher-quality visitors and greater spending power. Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool has said Thailand is moving toward a new tourism model focused on wellness, medical tourism, luxury travel, incentive trips and sports tourism, while improving safety, order and visitor convenience through technology. If completed as planned, the upgraded Jomtien Beach could become more than a place for relaxation, potentially developing into a major seaside destination for quality tourism, events and activities that generate new income for Pattaya’s economy.
