Cambodia's 'Kapea Scams' App Praised by Citizens for Online Fraud Reporting

The online fraud reporting application 'Kapea Scams' introduced in Cambodia is gaining significant traction among citizens. The app serves as a crucial platform for individuals who have fallen victim to technology-based scams to report information to the authorities. Victims view the application as instrumental in providing an opportunity for those facing potential harm from scams perpetrated by fraudsters or criminal syndicates to report to the competent authorities for immediate action and measures. They express gratitude for the establishment of this app, noting the increasing number of citizens who have encountered various forms of fraud, including bank account hacking, data breaches, and impersonation scams where individuals pose as government officials to extort money. Furthermore, they believe this new mechanism will contribute to eradicating the prevalent offenses within the Kingdom of Cambodia. This initiative underscores the government''s commitment to safeguarding the security and safety of its citizens, preventing them from being lured into financial losses by unknown individuals. Recently, Major General Sok Nitya, Director of the Anti-Cybercrime Department of the National Police, highlighted the prevalent cyber fraud offenses. These include scams related to online shopping, hacking of social media and bank accounts, investment fraud, and romance scams. Notably, criminals are currently impersonating relatives, employees of private companies, or government officials, contacting victims via mobile phones and fabricating stories, such as traffic accidents, to demand payments to avoid further complications.
