India's Training Aid Crucial for Cambodia's Peacekeeping Operations

Since 2007, India has provided training support, enabling over 10,000 Cambodian soldiers to participate in missions across 10 countries.
Major General Sam Ratana, Acting Director General of the National Center for Peacekeeping Forces, has highlighted the significance of training assistance from the Republic of India. During a working meeting on July 1, 2026, with Colonel Abishek Arora, the Indian Defence Attaché to Cambodia, Major General Sam Ratana expressed his profound gratitude for India's continued support since 2007. Major General Sam Ratana stated that through training assistance from friendly nations, including India, Cambodia has been able to continuously deploy its forces for United Nations peacekeeping operations. From 2006 to the present, Cambodia has dispatched a total of 10,440 personnel, including 988 women, to 12 missions in 10 countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Lebanon, Chad, Cyprus, Syria, Mali, the Central African Republic, Yemen, and the Congo. Their expertise covers mine clearance, gendarmerie, level-2 medical support, unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance, airport engineering, horizontal and vertical construction engineering, staff officer duties, and observer roles. In the mission area in the Republic of Lebanon, the Cambodian and Indian contingents are stationed adjacent to each other, allowing for the exchange of experiences and traditions. Indian forces have provided protection to Cambodian forces during their deployments within and around their bases, while Cambodian engineering forces have assisted in constructing security posts, checkpoints, and shelters. In the mission area in the Republic of South Sudan, Indian forces have cooperated effectively with Cambodian forces, providing medical examinations and treatment to Cambodian troops stationed in Juba and Malakal, as well as offering protection to Cambodian forces in Malakal. During the meeting, Major General Sam Ratana requested India to provide military instructors for annual training in peacekeeping, engineering, counter-improvised explosive devices (C-IED), and mine clearance for Cambodian peacekeeping forces in Cambodia. He also requested scholarships for Cambodian officers for further training in peacekeeping in India, to promote the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the construction and equipping of a Level-1 hospital at the Multi-Disciplinary Training School in Kampong Speu Province, to facilitate annual exchange visits in the field of peacekeeping between the two countries, and to continue providing protection and medical treatment to Cambodian forces deployed in the mission areas in the Republic of Lebanon and South Sudan. In response, Colonel Abishek Arora, the Indian Defence Attaché to Cambodia, expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation with the National Center for Peacekeeping Forces and stated that he would submit all current requests to the Ministry of Defence of India for review and decision.
