M6.4 Quake Jolts Davao Occidental, Aftershock of Destructive June Tremor Suspected
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off Davao Occidental, Philippines. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) suspects it is an aftershock of the destructive M7.8 earthquake in June. No tsunami warning was issued and significant damage is not expected.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake jolted offshore of Davao Occidental in the southern Philippines. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) stated that the tremor is highly likely an aftershock of the destructive magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the same offshore area on June 8. The earthquake occurred at 12:14 p.m. on Wednesday, with its epicenter located approximately 37 kilometers south-southwest of Balut Island in the Municipality of Sarangani. PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol explained that the quake was generated by the Cotabato Trench and is considered an aftershock of the June mainshock. He added that aftershocks from the June event are expected to continue in the coming weeks. According to the latest report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in June resulted in over 90 fatalities and at least P1.47 billion in infrastructure damage. The magnitude 6.4 aftershock was felt in several areas, with Intensity V recorded in Glan, Sarangani. Other areas reported intensities ranging from IV to II. PHIVOLCS has confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued and no damage is expected from this earthquake. The Philippines is situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for its high seismic activity. The Cotabato Trench area, where the epicenter was located, has a history of significant earthquakes. This latest aftershock, occurring while recovery efforts are underway from the June earthquake, could pose further anxiety for affected residents. The government will need to remain vigilant regarding aftershock activity and ensure the safety of its citizens.
