Visayas Grid Faces Red Alert Again Due to Coal Plant Outages

Consumers in the Visayas region of the Philippines may experience rotational brownouts anew on Wednesday as a significant number of coal-fired power plants in the area and in Mindanao remain offline. The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the Visayas grid will be under a red alert status from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m., with a yellow alert expected from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. The persistent tight electricity supply is attributed to the unavailability of several large coal facilities and limited power imports from Mindanao. Mindanao itself is also slated to be under a yellow alert from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. due to outages at two of its coal plants. A yellow alert signifies that available power reserves are thinning, meaning any unexpected plant outage could trigger service interruptions. A red alert indicates that the supply cannot meet the demand, raising the risk of rotational brownouts unless consumption is managed effectively.
