Over 15 Years of Dedication: Vietnamese Woman Aids Identification of Over 1,500 Fallen Soldiers' Remains

In Vietnam, a woman has dedicated over 15 years to the collection and identification of fallen soldiers' remains. Ms. Tran Thi Oanh Lan, Deputy Head of the Organization and Policy Department at the Vietnam Association for Supporting Fallen Soldiers' Families, has been accompanying families of martyrs nationwide since she could not find the remains of her maternal grandfather who died in the war against French colonialism. Her efforts go beyond mere collection. Utilizing the latest generation of DNA technology, she has enabled the identification of 1,563 sets of remains and 9 collective graves. This initiative is part of the "500 Days and Nights" campaign accelerated by the Ministry of Health, contributing to the acceleration of national commemoration efforts. This work also serves to "restore memories," piecing back together lost narratives. Ms. Lan and her supporters play a crucial role in fulfilling the long-cherished wish of families to have their loved ones "return home," reaffirming the bond between fallen soldiers and their families. Furthermore, activities continue to organize mementos of "Group B" cadres who were sent to the South, perpetuating journeys of gratitude. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the state emphasizes maintaining social order and national unity. Activities such as commemorating fallen soldiers and collecting remains hold significant meaning in fostering patriotism and strengthening national solidarity. For Vietnam, which suffered numerous casualties in prolonged conflicts, such efforts deeply resonate with national sentiment. In its relations with China, historical lessons inform a national consciousness of preserving independence and sovereignty, and these commemorative activities can further enhance a sense of national belonging.
