PNP Chief: School Violence Not Prevalent Despite Tacloban Shooting

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. insisted that incidents of school violence are not prevalent in the country, even in the wake of a school shooting in Tacloban City that tragically claimed the lives of three students. General Nartatez, while acknowledging past school brawls and violent incidents, maintained that the current situation cannot be described as "prevalent." He suggested that the Tacloban incident was an isolated occurrence and not indicative of a wider trend spreading throughout schools. This statement could potentially be seen as downplaying the severity of school violence. In the Philippines, factors such as the increasing number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and rural-to-urban migration have been linked to rising stress and social isolation among young people, which may not be unrelated to school violence. Furthermore, with escalating geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea, maintaining domestic security is a pressing national concern, and ensuring safety in educational environments directly impacts the development of the future generation.
