Cambodian National Assembly Submits Draft Law on Commune/Sangkat Administration to Specialized Committee
The Standing Committee of the Cambodian National Assembly has submitted a draft law amending the law on the administration of Communes/Sangkats to a specialized committee. This committee will conduct thorough research and study of the draft before it is presented for debate and adoption by the National Assembly. This move is seen as part of efforts to review local governance.
The Standing Committee of the Cambodian National Assembly, in a meeting held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, under the high presidency of Samdech Mahathipathidai Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly, decided to submit the draft law on the amendment of the law on the administration of Communes/Sangkats to a specialized committee for study and research. As a result of the meeting, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly assigned the Committee on Interior, National Defense, Public Functions, and Border Affairs of the National Assembly to review and study the draft law, in cooperation with the Committee on Legislation and Justice of the National Assembly. The results of the study will then be reported to the plenary session of the National Assembly. This legislative initiative aims to refine the framework for local governance in Cambodia, a nation experiencing rapid economic development and urbanization. The proposed amendments are expected to address the evolving needs of communes and sangkats in managing their administrative functions and delivering public services more effectively.
