Vietnam Proposes 19 Additional Investments to Boost 10 Trillion VND Flood Control Project Efficiency

The Vietnamese government has proposed 19 new investments to maximize the effectiveness of a national flood control project, which already has a budget of 10 trillion VND (approximately $400 million). This proposal specifically aims to reduce flood risks in densely populated areas like Ho Chi Minh City. The additional investments will cover a wide range of measures, including strengthening drainage systems, improving water storage capacity, and increasing green spaces within urban areas. These initiatives are designed not only to manage floodwaters but also to promote rainwater retention and infiltration, thereby enhancing urban sustainability. Vietnam is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Areas like the southern delta region and Ho Chi Minh City frequently experience flood damage from storm surges and heavy rainfall, making infrastructure development increasingly critical. This project is part of the national infrastructure investment drive under Vietnam's one-party system, aiming to balance economic growth support with the assurance of public safety. Strengthening domestic infrastructure is also crucial for Vietnam's economic stability, particularly given its economic interdependence with China. The government anticipates that these additional investments will enable existing infrastructure to function more effectively, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life for residents and a reduced impact on economic activities. Following detailed review by relevant ministries, specific implementation plans for the proposed 19 items are expected to be formulated.
