Cambodia Cracks Down on Illegal Fishing Gear at Trapeang Thma Reservoir

Authorities in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province have launched strict crackdowns on illegal fishing at the Trapeang Thma Reservoir, aiming to protect aquatic resources and ensure the breeding season for fish. Officials are urgently calling on local residents to cease the use of illegal fishing gear. On the afternoon of September 1st, a joint force of 11 personnel, led by Deputy Governor of Banteay Meanchey province, Khlok Nuy, conducted patrols on the waters of the Trapeang Thma Reservoir. This operation was conducted on behalf of the provincial governor, Um Ratry. During the site inspection, Deputy Governor Khlok Nuy urged fishermen and local residents to immediately stop using prohibited fishing gear in the Trapeang Thma Reservoir and other flooded areas. He emphasized that the current period is a closed fishing season and a critical time for fish to spawn and reproduce, stating that participation in protecting aquatic resources now will ensure food sources and sustainable livelihoods for future generations. Furthermore, the deputy governor issued a stern warning to those who continue to engage in illegal activities, stating that authorities will implement the strictest legal measures without exception. In the operation on the same day, specialized forces investigated and confiscated numerous types of illegal fishing gear, including 81 fish traps (totaling 1,800 meters in length), 25 modified nets, and 102 fishing poles. To demonstrate a strong commitment to combating natural resource crimes, all confiscated illegal fishing gear was immediately destroyed by fire on-site. Banteay Meanchey provincial authorities continue to appeal to the public to act as their eyes and ears, reporting any illegal fishing activities to local authorities promptly, to jointly preserve the Trapeang Thma Reservoir as a habitat for aquatic life and a rich biodiversity conservation area.
