Vietnam's Newest Airline Races from Phu Quoc onto the Global Stage

Sun PhuQuoc Airways, the airline of Sun Group, officially launched in October 2025 and began commercial flights the following month, entering a Vietnamese aviation market riding a wave of post-pandemic recovery, but also grappling with rising costs, fleet constraints, talent shortages, infrastructure pressure, and intensifying service competition. Less than a year in, this newcomer has already made its presence felt. Based in the key tourist destination of Phu Quoc Island, the airline is expanding its domestic network with an eye toward future international expansion. In Vietnam's single-party system, policies prioritizing economic growth are being advanced, with the aviation industry being one of the sectors benefiting from this focus. However, rapid growth highlights challenges in infrastructure development and talent cultivation. The entry of Sun PhuQuoc Airways is expected to further intensify competition in the domestic aviation market and contribute to increased tourism and regional economic revitalization. Meanwhile, its ability to navigate challenges such as fluctuating fuel prices, adherence to international safety standards, and differentiation from competitors will be key to its future growth.
